Art deco and art nouveau lovers rejoice!
Absolute gem of a place to stop in and check out – it’s kind of like Downtown Abbey but a Dutch version near a main canal, in a very old city (aren’t they all very old cities over there?) with a most elegant park space that also used to belong to the family that built the house. It’s a fairly new house, as far as homes in this area go – I think it dates back to around 1900 or so (far cry from the 1620 dates inscribed on the houses in Blokzijl), and the grounds are populated with a herd of deer, who look rather unaware of the luck of the draw that they’ve gotten.
The downstairs museum is about Hendrick de Keyser, the architect of Amsterdam, and the middle floor is the house. Then they taunt you by letting you go upstairs but all the rooms are off limits. So very Dutch of them haha

Steenwijk, along with Blokzijl, are located in Overijssel, which is next door to the province of Friesland. Many Hanseatic cities are in this province.
